11 Trapped

As Jax watched in horror, the first creature bit deep into his friend’s leg. Blood spurted into the air as Rhys screamed—

“Aaaaaiiigh!”

—and the other creature lurched forward and latched onto the boy’s shoulder. Two more snappers were already staggering toward them, only a few steps away.

“Rhys!”

Jax dropped his head, about to rush back to help but Becca, moving fast, pushed him sideways, knocking him into the nearest row of seats. And before his addled brain could process what was happening, she’d wrapped him in a vicious, spine-numbing headlock. He tried to break free, but as Rhys screamed, Becca dug her fingers hard into a pair of incredibly sensitive nerves, driving her fingertips in so deep that even the slightest resistance sent bolts of agony lancing through Jax’s body like red-hot needles.

“It’s too late,” Becca whispered in a voice as soft as a feather. The words were so quiet, and so gentle, they were almost hypnotic. Almost more imagined than real. “You can’t help him now. You can’t. And if you try, they’ll just get you too.”

Through the corner of his eye, Jax could see that the third screecher had already fallen upon his friend. And when it lifted its head, its face was smeared with blood.

Rhys’s blood.

Rhys had stopped screaming, but was still fighting—writhing, wriggling, wrestling—as the vile creatures tore into him. A fourth crusthead had staggered close. There wasn’t room for it to join in, and its empty black eyes turned upon Jax and Becca. With a moan, it lifted its hands toward them.

Becca saw the thing too. But she didn’t release her hold on Jax. Merely lowered her mouth to his ear.

“Are you done fighting?”

Jax tried once more to wrench himself free, but instantly quit as Becca’s fingers dug deep into the tender nerves.

“Are you done?”

“Y—yes! Yes!”

“Are you sure?”

“Ye—yes!”

She held him for another moment. And then whispered again.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “He’s my friend, too. But there’s nothing we can do to help him. Nothing. And if we don’t leave right now, they’ll get us too.” And then: “Are you coming?”

“Yes.” Jax managed to say. He was torn between the screaming pain of Becca’s Vulcan nerve pinch and the grunting, snapping biter staggering toward them. “Yes-yes-yes! Let’s go!”

Becca waited another second, then released her grip. Jax instantly felt hot blood rushing back into parts of his body that had been temporarily deprived, but didn’t take time to appreciate it. Becca took his hand, gave it a vicious jerk, and said: “C’mon … let’s get out of here.”

Forgetting that they were barricaded, they ran to the central stairs and started up, Becca in front, Jax just behind. Jax caught a glimpse of the forward section of the cabin, spotting a scattering of snapheads wandering aimlessly about.

And combined with those still down on the third level … jeez, no wonder no one wants to let us land!

There was suddenly a commotion at the top of the spiral stairs. The thin security door was only open a crack, but Jax could see Steve’s bearded face leering down at them.
